Is Claude Code free?
No, Claude Code isn't on Claude's free plan. It comes with Pro ($20/mo) and Max. Here are the limits, student options and free alternatives.
No, Claude Code is not free: Anthropic's pricing page lists it as included in the paid Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, but not in the Free plan (checked Oct 15, 2026).
Below is what each plan costs, how the limits work, which students can get it at no cost, and what the free alternatives really involve. For our overview of the tool itself, see our Claude Code tool page.
Is there a Claude Code free tier or free plan?
Not from Anthropic directly. Claude does have a Free plan at $0, but on the plan comparison table the "Claude Code" row reads "No" for Free and "Yes" for Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x (Claude pricing, checked Oct 15, 2026). Anthropic's FAQ on the same page says "Claude Code is included in all paid plans."
So when people search for a "Claude Code free tier", the honest answer is that the free part is chat on web, desktop and mobile. The coding agent in your terminal starts with Pro.
What Claude Code costs
All prices are from claude.com/pricing, checked Oct 15, 2026. They exclude tax, and Anthropic says plans and prices can change.
| Plan | Price | Claude Code? |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No |
| Pro | $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month billed annually ($200 up front) | Yes |
| Max 5x / Max 20x | From $100/month (monthly billing only) | Yes |
| Team | Per-seat (see pricing page) | Yes |
| Enterprise | "$20 per seat per month plus usage billed at API rates", billed annually | Yes |
There is also a pay-as-you-go route. The pricing FAQ says you can use API credits through a Claude Console account for heavy coding sessions, billed per token at the published API rates on the same page. That is not free either, but you pay only for what you use.
Claude Code limits
Anthropic does not publish a fixed message count. Here is what its own pages say:
- One shared pool. Usage in Claude on web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code all counts against the same limits (pricing FAQ; usage limits help article).
- Two kinds of limit. Paid plans have a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit (usage limits help article).
- Pro vs Max. Pro gives at least 5x the usage of Free per five-hour session. Max gives 5x or 20x the usage of Pro per session (pricing FAQ; Max plan help article).
- Extra caps are possible. Anthropic says it may also limit usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at its discretion (Max plan help article).
- A separate Fable cap on Max. Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for the Fable models (Claude Code with Pro or Max).
- What affects usage. Conversation length and complexity, the features you use, the model, and the effort level (usage limits help article).
- When you hit a limit. You can wait for the reset, upgrade, turn on usage credits, or switch to a Claude Console account and buy API usage credits (Claude Code with Pro or Max; usage limits help article). The same Pro/Max article says the monthly API credits included with Max can't be used in Claude Code, and that you can check your remaining allowance with
/status. - Watch for API keys. If you have an
ANTHROPIC_API_KEYenvironment variable set, Claude Code uses it instead of your subscription, so you are billed at API rates (Claude Code with Pro or Max).
In Claude Code, /clear and /compact help keep long sessions within context limits, and API-key users can check spend with /cost (Models, usage, and limits in Claude Code).
Is Claude Code free for students?
Sometimes, through your university rather than through Anthropic directly. Anthropic lists Claude Code among its products for higher education (Claude for Education). Its help article for students says your university may have customized features or applied its own policies, and tells you to check with your university's IT department (Anthropic help article).
Check your school's IT pages before you pay for a plan.
The free-claude-code GitHub repo
If you search "free Claude Code", you will likely find Alishahryar1/free-claude-code. Here is what it actually is, based on its README and the GitHub API (checked Oct 15, 2026):
- What it does. It is a local proxy that connects coding agent apps, including the Claude Code app, to other model providers. The PyPI listing describes it as a "local proxy connecting coding agents to OpenAI-compatible AI providers" (PyPI).
- What it routes to. It does not give you free access to Anthropic's Claude models. Your requests go to whichever provider you set up. The README lists options such as NVIDIA NIM, OpenRouter, Groq, the OpenAI API, and your own ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot sign-in, plus local models. Some of these have free tiers and some use your own paid keys or subscriptions. The README describes the result as "free, paid, subscription, and local models."
- Not affiliated. The README says it is an independent project, "not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic."
- Terms and reliability. The README calls its providers "ToS-friendly" and says it removes integrations that stop being allowed. That is the project's own claim, not a ruling from any provider. In our view, you should read the terms of each provider you connect, especially for subscription sign-ins like ChatGPT or Copilot, and expect free provider quotas and models to change without notice. Output quality depends on the model you route to, not on Claude.
- Install caution. The quick start pipes a remote script into your shell. In our view, read the script before you run it.
- Maintenance. It is actively maintained: the latest release, v6.16.8, was published on Oct 15, 2026, and the repo is not archived (GitHub releases). It is licensed AGPL-3.0 (PyPI).
In our view, it is a reasonable option if you want the Claude Code workflow with other models and you are fine managing provider keys. It is not a free way to use Claude.
Other free or cheaper alternatives
We only list routes here that a source above supports:
- Pay as you go with API credits through a Claude Console account, billed per token (Claude pricing). For light or occasional use this can cost less than a subscription. In our view, keep an eye on
/cost. - Pro billed annually is $17/month instead of $20 (checked Oct 15, 2026, Claude pricing).
- University access through Claude for Education, where your school offers it (see above).
