How to Give Your Grok Bot a Phone Number (Calls and Texts)
Three ways to let a Grok Bot make calls or send texts: Bland, Twilio or Zapier. What each costs, how to set it up, and the confirm-first safety step.
Yes. A Grok Bot can place phone calls or send texts once you connect it to a phone service, and there are three common ways to do it: Bland for AI voice calls, Twilio for a real number that handles calls and SMS, and Zapier as a no-code route that can also send texts and make simple calls. Each one needs an account and, in most cases, an API key that you give the Bot through a secure secret request. Whichever you pick, set the Bot to show you who it will call and what it will say, and to dial only after you say yes.
Can a Grok Bot make phone calls?
Not by default. Grok Bot works through its cloud computer, the browser and connected apps. A phone call needs a phone service. Once that is connected, the Bot can start calls or send messages through the service's API or app actions. xAI's Grok Bot marketplace already lists a template called "dial bot", in the From Grok Bot Team category. It places outbound Bland AI calls when you ask, then reports what happened, and asks for a Bland API key and voice the first time you use it (x.ai Grok Bot marketplace, checked Oct 18, 2026).
Option 1: Bland (AI voice calls)
Bland runs the voice side of the call: speech recognition, the language model and the voice. You give it a phone number and a task, and its agent talks to the person who answers.
Agent Phone plan. Bland also sells an Agent Phone plan that gives an AI agent one dedicated US local number for calls and texts. Bland names Claude, Codex, Muse and Grok Bot as AIs you can connect, says Grok Bot users get a ready-made template, and says it isn't partnered with or endorsed by xAI. The plan is $14.99 for the first month (once per account owner), then $29.99/month, charged when you approve it. Calls and texts to US and Canada destinations are unlimited, subject to fair use: one active call at a time, up to 20 calls an hour and 50 a day, 1,000 call minutes a day, and 100 texts a day. The agent can also take incoming calls on the same number. You can start on $2 of free credits instead, but that gives calls only, at $0.14 per connected minute, with no dedicated number and no texting (bland.ai/agent-phone-plan and docs.bland.ai Agent Phone Plan, checked Oct 18, 2026).
Setup in brief. Create a Bland account, get an API key, and give it to your Bot when it asks for it. xAI's docs say a secure secret request keeps the value masked, out of the transcript, and hidden from the model (docs.x.ai, Approvals, security, and privacy, checked Oct 18, 2026). Don't paste the key into ordinary chat.
Pricing (bland.ai/pricing, checked Oct 18, 2026):
- Start: $0.14 per minute of talk time, no platform fee and no card required. Includes 2 credits and an inbound number, which Bland values at $15/month. Transfer time is $0.05/min. Limits are 10 concurrent calls and 100 calls per day.
- Build: $0.12/min plus a $299/month platform fee, with 2,000 calls per day.
- Scale: $0.11/min plus a $499/month platform fee, with 5,000 calls per day. Scale is listed on Bland's Billing & Plans docs page, not on bland.ai/pricing (docs.bland.ai/platform/billing, checked Oct 18, 2026).
- Enterprise: custom.
Bland says the per-minute rate covers the language model, speech-to-text and text-to-speech, and that telephony is billed separately, either on your own carrier or on Bland's at pass-through cost.
Who it suits. In our view, Bland is the most direct route when you want the Bot to hold a real spoken conversation, like booking a table or asking a question on your behalf. See our Bland tool page.
One X user, @itsolelehmann, reported a walkthrough on giving a Grok Bot its own number for calls that can't be done on a website, such as chasing a refund or booking a table.
Option 2: Twilio (a real number for calls and SMS)
Twilio gives you a phone number and an API for sending and receiving calls and text messages. It doesn't supply an AI voice on its own. Bland can connect to an existing Twilio account, so you can use the two together.
US pricing (twilio.com, checked Oct 18, 2026):
- Voice: making calls from a local number is $0.0140/min, and receiving calls is $0.0085/min. A local number costs $1.15/month, or $2.15/month for toll-free. Twilio says these prices were current as of August 2026, and that a free trial gives you $15 to buy a number and test Voice features.
- SMS: $0.0083 per outbound or inbound SMS on a long-code (10-digit) number, and $0.022 per outbound MMS. Carrier fees are extra, and a $0.001 fee applies to messages that end in a Failed status.
- US texting registration: Twilio's SMS pricing page says US A2P 10DLC messaging is subject to registration onboarding fees. Plan for that step before you text from a 10-digit number.
Who it suits. People who want a number they control, texts as well as calls, or the option to receive incoming messages.
Option 3: Zapier (the no-code route)
Zapier connects apps without code. Two of its options fit here:
- The Twilio app in Zapier has a "Call Phone" action, which calls a number and says a message, and a "Send SMS" action. You still need a Twilio account (zapier.com Twilio integrations, checked Oct 18, 2026).
- SMS by Zapier uses Zapier's own built-in number to send a limited number of text messages, which Zapier suggests for reminders (zapier.com SMS by Zapier, checked Oct 18, 2026).
Pricing (zapier.com/pricing, checked Oct 18, 2026): Free is $0/month with 100 tasks per month and two-step Zaps. Professional is from $19.99/mo billed annually, or $29.99/month billed monthly, and adds multi-step Zaps, Premium apps and webhooks.
@rodamn reported being surprised that a Grok Bot hadn't picked up a Zapier or Twilio skill for texting, and asked about free ways to add one.

The safety step: confirm before dialing
A phone call can't be unsent. Before your Bot places any call or text, have it show you three things: who it is contacting, the exact number, and the script or message. It should dial only after you say yes.
Grok Bot has a built-in way to enforce this. With Auto-review on, you can add an Ask first rule in Settings → General → Auto-review. Ask first rules always stop matching actions for your approval, and if an Ask first rule and an Allow automatically rule both match, Ask first wins (docs.x.ai, Approvals, security, and privacy, checked Oct 18, 2026). A rule like "Ask first before placing any phone call or sending any text" works well.
Also:
- Never let a Bot auto-call or auto-text a list of people.
- Calling and texting rules exist in many places, including consent rules for automated calls and texts. This isn't legal advice. If you plan anything beyond calling a business for yourself, check the rules where you and the recipient are.
Book a restaurant table by phone
Restaurant booking is one of the most common examples. @elonmusk reported that Grok Bot can call restaurants by phone and book a table, sharing another user's post about a booking bot.
A good request includes the restaurant's name and number, the date, time and party size, acceptable alternatives, and what the Bot should do if the restaurant only takes online bookings.
Negotiate a bill by phone
People also search for an "AI negotiate bill" option, or a way to negotiate medical bills by phone. @MichaelGannotti reported that someone's Grok Bot called an Xfinity representative, settled on a cheaper internet plan, and turned down an add-on offer.
In our view, treat this as a starting point, not a promise. Results depend on the provider and your account, and nothing guarantees savings. Before the call, give the Bot your current bill, the outcome you'd accept, and what it must not agree to, such as new contracts or extra lines. Keep the confirm-first rule on. For medical bills especially, consider whether you're comfortable sharing account and health details with a phone service before you start.
Where to go next
Browse Grok Bot templates, see everyday use cases, or start with the Grok Bot beginners guide. If privacy is the concern, the Remove Phone Number bot covers the other side of phone numbers.
What we haven't tested: we haven't set up or run any of these three routes, or the xAI dial bot, and we haven't checked the results reported in the X posts above.
FAQ
Can a Grok Bot text me?
Yes, once you connect a texting service such as Bland's Agent Phone plan, Twilio or SMS by Zapier.
Is there a free option?
Bland's Start plan has no platform fee and includes 2 credits, but calls are still charged per minute. Zapier's Free plan includes 100 tasks a month, and SMS by Zapier sends a limited number of texts from Zapier's own number. Twilio offers a $15 trial credit. Bland's Agent Phone plan has no free trial, but you can connect on $2 of free credits for calls only.
Does it use my own number?
Usually not. Twilio and Bland give you a separate number, and Bland's Agent Phone plan includes one US local number. Using your personal number would need the provider's own support for that, which we haven't checked.
Can it answer incoming calls?
Twilio prices incoming calls, Bland's Start plan includes an inbound number, and Bland says an agent on the Agent Phone plan can take incoming calls on its number. We haven't confirmed how a Grok Bot would handle them live.
What does a call cost?
On Bland's Start plan, $0.14 per minute of talk time, plus telephony. On Twilio, $0.0140 per minute to make a call from a local US number, without an AI voice. On Bland's Agent Phone plan, calls to the US and Canada are included in the $29.99/month fee, within fair-use limits. All prices checked Oct 18, 2026.
