Grok Bot missing after switching to The X Subscription

Bots missing after moving to The X Subscription? Back up first, sign out and back in with your original method, and avoid Reset. Sourced steps.

If your bots disappeared after you moved to The X Subscription or combined accounts, they usually haven't been deleted. Per Cursor's support staff, during the switch your bots can end up on a different account from your plan (Cursor forum). The fix they suggest first is to fully sign out of Grok Bot everywhere, including the app and grok.com, then sign back in with the same method you used when you created the bots. Don't reset your bot's computer, delete anything, or buy a second subscription while you wait. Back up anything you can still reach before you start.

What people are reporting

Several users described this on X around Oct 20–21, 2026. One said that after unifying a legacy SuperGrok and X account, all their bots were gone and the account said the plan didn't include Bots (reported by @ThisisKyrstin). Another said their account was stuck in an "already being merged" state for five days (reported by @whatwhowhenhoow). A third said merging plans wiped nine bots on one account, and now exports their bots' rules, routines and memory every week (reported by @KraJan_303).

In our view, these reports match what Cursor staff described: the bots and the plan landing on different accounts.

What's supposed to happen in a merge

xAI's docs on combining accounts say your Grok Bots move to the primary account with the same bot IDs, along with chats, tasks, memory, routines, files and per-bot usage. Some items stay on the other account, including Grok Bot settings, the bot email inbox, MCP setup, and templates. The docs say that if combining stops partway, no Grok Bot data is deleted, but some may stay on the other account until it finishes, and to contact Support if that happens (xAI docs).

Step 1: Back up what you can reach

Before you change anything, save what you can.

  • Create a template of each bot you can still open. Per xAI's docs, you open the bot's Share menu and choose Create template. A template includes the bot's identity, description, skills and routines. It does not include your computer, your logins, or your conversation history (xAI docs). Treat it as a way to rebuild a bot's setup, not a full backup. Templates can be public links, so remove API keys and private details first.
  • Ask each bot to write out its own setup. @KraJan_303 described asking each bot to write its profile, routines with full prompts, skills and memory into one file, then saving that file outside the account (reported by @KraJan_303). In our view, this is a reasonable extra step, since templates leave out conversations.

Step 2: Fully quit and reopen

Cursor's help pages say missing chats or bots are usually not deleted, and to start by fully quitting and reopening the app. They also suggest checking another device signed in to the same account, and making sure you're on the same Cursor account (Cursor help FAQ).

If you hid a bot, it isn't gone: hiding a bot removes only its sidebar row, and its chat, routines and memory stay.

Step 3: Sign out and sign back in with your original method

This is the main fix Cursor staff suggest (Cursor forum), and @grok gave the same advice on X (reported by @grok).

  1. Open settings from the account button at the bottom left of the sidebar (your avatar and account name), or press Cmd+,.
  2. On the General tab, use Sign Out on the account card.
  3. Sign out of grok.com in your browser too.
  4. Sign back in with Sign In with Cursor, using the same method you used when you first created the bots, for example the same email or the same "Sign in with" provider.

If you get stuck in a sign-in loop, Cursor's FAQ says to update the app, sign out and sign in again, clear cookies for cursor.com and x.ai, and try a private window. If the error is new, wait 30 to 60 minutes (Cursor help FAQ).

If signing back in doesn't help, staff asked users to report which side they land on: a plan with no bots, or bots with a subscribe prompt (Cursor forum).

Step 4: If your bots are back but the computer won't start

Some users found their bots after the merge but the bots' computer wouldn't start. In that case, @grok suggested fully quitting and reopening the app, signing in with the primary account, then using Update Bot's Computer (reported by @grok).

The path is Settings → Computer → Update Bot's Computer. The button says "Update," and you click it twice to confirm ("Click Again to Confirm"). It moves your bot's computer to a fresh instance and keeps files and logins, but you'll need to reinstall any software you installed.

Update Bot's Computer is different from Reset Bot's Computer, which restores from the last saved snapshot and can lose recent work. Cursor's help pages say not to use Reset to look for missing bots (Cursor help FAQ). It's also different from Settings → Updates → Check for Updates, which updates the Grok Bot app itself.

Step 5: If your plan says it doesn't include Bots

On The X Subscription, Grok Bot is included with Premium, Super and Ultra. Plus and Free don't include it (Cursor help: plans). If your plan includes Grok Bot and you still see this message, it may be the account mix-up described above. Staff asked users not to buy a second subscription to work around it (Cursor forum).

Step 6: Contact support

Cursor staff asked affected users to email support@x.ai with the email on their account (Cursor forum). Cursor's FAQ says to include your account email, your Grok Bot version, a screenshot, and a request ID if you have one. The steps you already tried are also useful (Cursor help FAQ).

What not to do

According to Cursor staff and help pages:

  • Don't reset your bot's computer.
  • Don't delete bots or create replacements to work around it.
  • Don't buy a second subscription.

FAQ

Are my bots deleted? Usually not, according to Cursor's help pages and staff. They're often on a different account from your plan.

Does a template back up my chats? No. Per xAI's docs, a template includes identity, description, skills and routines, but not your computer, logins or conversation history.

Will Update Bot's Computer bring my bots back? It's for a computer that won't start, not for missing bots. It keeps files and logins but you'll need to reinstall software.

Should I use Reset? Not to look for missing bots. Cursor's help pages say to avoid it.
