Add to Grok Bot link not working? How to fix it
Add to Grok Bot link not opening, or Safari says invalid link? Install the Grok Bot app, sign in on an eligible plan, then open the template link again.
If an Add to Grok Bot link does nothing, or Safari says the link is invalid, the usual cause is that the Grok Bot app is not installed on that device. The button hands the template to the app through a grokbot:// deep link, and that kind of link only opens once the app is there. The template page itself is fine. Install Grok Bot, sign in with an account on an eligible plan, then open the same x.ai link again and choose Add to Grok Bot.
The rest of this guide goes through what the link actually does, how to fix the Safari "invalid link" message, what to try when the app says "Can't add to Grok Bot. Try Again", and a few checks for team links.
What the Add to Grok Bot button does
A shared Grok Bot template starts life when someone opens a Bot's Share menu, chooses Create template, and copies the link. xAI's documentation describes what happens next: the recipient "opens a preview on x.ai and can choose Add to Grok Bot. They need the Grok Bot app to finish adding it." (docs.x.ai, Create and manage Bots, checked Oct 16, 2026).
So there are two steps, and they happen in two places:
- The preview is an ordinary web page on x.ai. Any browser can show it.
- The add happens inside the Grok Bot app. The button on the web page asks your device to open the app with that template.
Adding a template creates your own copy of the Bot. According to the same docs page, it does not give you the creator's computer, logins, or conversation history. Shared Bots are made by other users, not by xAI, and adding one accepts the third-party bot terms.
That second step explains most "link not working" reports. If the app is missing, the device has nothing to hand the link to.
Fix the Safari "invalid link" error
On iPhone and iPad, Safari shows an invalid-link message when it is given an app link that no installed app has claimed. In a reply to a user who saw exactly this, the official @grok account explained that Add to Grok Bot "uses a deep link (grokbot://) that only works once the app is installed. The page itself is valid." (post on X, read Oct 16, 2026).
Here is the fix, in order:
- Install Grok Bot. On iPhone, download it from the App Store. xAI lists the requirement as an iPhone with iOS 18 or later; the iOS app also runs on iPad with iPadOS 18 or later. On Android, it is on Google Play and needs Android 9 or later (docs.x.ai, Grok Bot for Mobile, checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Open the app and sign in. Choose Log In or Sign Up and finish the browser step. If your access comes from a SuperGrok subscription, choose Link Grok Account when the access screen asks, then Finished Linking? Refresh My Status.
- Go back to the template page on x.ai and tap Add to Grok Bot again.
- Review and add. The app shows the template's details. xAI's own walkthrough describes checking the context and integrations included with the Bot and then choosing Add Bot (x.ai, Templates for Grok Bot, checked Oct 16, 2026).
If you are on a computer instead, the same rule applies: the desktop app has to be installed. The Get started guide lists desktop builds for macOS, Windows, and Linux, all from the downloads page at x.ai/bot (docs.x.ai, Get started, checked Oct 16, 2026). On Linux, xAI's changelog notes a fix so that links that open Grok Bot launch the app (x.ai, Grok Bot changelog, v0.31.0, Sep 1, 2026, checked Oct 16, 2026), so an older Linux build is worth updating.
In our view, the simplest habit is to install the app before you start browsing templates. The preview is still useful on its own: you can read a template's description, skills, and routines in any browser before deciding to add it.
Check that you have Grok Bot access
Installing the app is not the whole story. You also need an account that includes Grok Bot. Two official pages describe this:
- On The X Subscription, Grok Bot is included on Premium, Super, and Ultra. The Plus plan does not include it (docs.x.ai, Grok Bot on The X Subscription, checked Oct 16, 2026).
- The Get started and mobile pages also list existing paid individual Cursor plans, the Cursor Teams plan, and SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus, or SuperGrok Heavy subscriptions linked to a Cursor account as eligible (docs.x.ai, Get started; Grok Bot for Mobile, checked Oct 16, 2026).
If sign-in itself stalls, xAI's troubleshooting page suggests keeping Grok Bot open while the browser step runs, returning to the app manually if it does not regain focus, choosing Sign in again, and confirming that the account has Grok Bot access (docs.x.ai, Troubleshooting, checked Oct 16, 2026).
"Can't add to Grok Bot. Try Again"
This message means the app opened, but the add did not finish. We could not find an official help page that documents this exact wording, so the steps below come from xAI's general troubleshooting advice and its changelog rather than from a page about this message.
- Update the app. On desktop, open Settings, then Updates, then Check for Updates, and choose Restart to Update if one is ready (docs.x.ai, Troubleshooting, checked Oct 16, 2026). The Oct 11, 2026 release (v0.70.2) lists a fix so that "adding one from a template" works while the Bot's computer is asleep or unreachable (x.ai, Grok Bot changelog, checked Oct 16, 2026). If you are on an older version, that fix alone may be the answer.
- Retry, then restart. The troubleshooting page recommends starting with the least destructive step: retry, then restart the Grok Bot app.
- Make sure you are signed in to the right account. If you use more than one account, confirm the one you intend to use is active. xAI's sign-in help makes the same point for sign-in errors (docs.x.ai, Grok Bot sign-in, checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Check your plan. An account without Grok Bot access cannot add a Bot. See the section above.
- Open the link fresh. Go back to the original x.ai template link rather than a copy forwarded through another app, and choose Add to Grok Bot again.
If it still fails, xAI suggests collecting the Grok Bot version, your operating system and version, the exact error message, the approximate time and time zone, and whether retrying or restarting changed anything before contacting support. Do not include passwords, one-time codes, or secret values (docs.x.ai, Troubleshooting, checked Oct 16, 2026).
Team-only template links
A template can be shared as a Public link or as Team-only. A Team-only link "opens only for members of your team," and accounts on an Enterprise plan default to Team-only (docs.x.ai, Create and manage Bots, checked Oct 16, 2026). If a colleague sent you a link and it will not open, ask whether it was shared as Team-only and whether you are signed in with your team account.
Before you add any template
A working link is not the same as a safe Bot. In our view, it is worth a minute to read what a template includes before adding it. xAI's docs note that a public link shows the Bot's identity, description, skills, and routines, and they ask creators to remove API keys, internal URLs, and customer data before sharing. On your side, connect only the apps the Bot really needs, and review its approval settings before letting it act on your accounts.

FAQ
Is the template page broken if Safari says "invalid link"?
No. The x.ai page is valid. Safari cannot open the grokbot:// link because the Grok Bot app is not installed on that device.
Can I add a template without the app? No. You can preview it in any browser, but xAI's docs say you need the Grok Bot app to finish adding it.
Which iPhone do I need? xAI lists iOS 18 or later. On iPad, iPadOS 18 or later. On Android, Android 9 or later.
Does adding a template give me the creator's accounts or chats? No. It creates a separate copy on your account without the creator's computer, logins, or conversation history.
The link opens for my coworker but not for me. Why? It may be a Team-only link, which opens only for members of that team.
